The John Thorpe Masonic Museum
THE MUSEUM
During the nineteenth century the Freemasons of Leicestershire & Rutland acquired a significant collection of books and artefacts that were held at the Masonic Hall in HalfordStreet. The collection was transferred to No. 80 London Road when the Freemasons acquired the building in 1910 and converted it into a Masonic Hall. The Library and Museum was established in the current Museum location as part of the rearrangement of the building in 1920.
In the succeeding years the Library and Museum Committee have been successful in adding some very interesting artefacts to the Museum which are of national importance.
In 2019 The David Hagger Library was established on the third floor of Freemasons’ Hall and the books which were in the Museum have been transferred to the Library or to a Research Room nearby.
The collection at London Road has been described as one of the finest collection of Masonic books and artefacts outside of London.
